Why Derms Say Bar Soaps Are Better Than Bodywash

Why Derms Say Bar Soaps Are Better Than Bodywash

Bar soaps offer a purer, more effective cleanse, according to dermatologists.

While liquid body wash has dominated the market since the late ’90s, bar soap has always been my go-to. It’s a budget-friendly, eco-conscious choice that avoids plastic waste. Despite the allure of body wash—its enticing scents, extensive variety, and stylish packaging—bar soap has some distinct advantages.

Dr. Brendan Camp, a board-certified dermatologist at MDCS Dermatology in New York, notes that bar soaps can be more effective at cleansing the skin. “Bar soaps are less diluted than liquid soaps, which are water-based and thus more prone to contamination with bacteria,” he explains. Contrary to the myth that bar soap harbors more germs, it might actually be cleaner.

Dr. Deanne Mraz, a board-certified dermatologist and co-founder of Modern Dermatology in Connecticut, highlights that bar soaps are also better for the environment. “They generally have a lower environmental impact throughout production, transportation, and packaging,” she says. Liquid soaps often rely on artificial preservatives and come in plastic containers that may not be BPA-free, whereas bar soaps are waterless and free from synthetic chemicals.

Since soaps can be drying, Camp advises choosing those with moisturizing ingredients like shea butter, avocado oil, glycerin, and ceramides. For those with sensitive skin, Mraz recommends bar soaps with colloidal oats to soothe and nourish.

1.  Aveeno moisturizing bar soap

Board-certified dermatologist Dr. Deanne Mraz endorses Aveeno’s bar soap for its ultra-gentle and nourishing qualities, making it an excellent choice for those with eczema or sensitive skin. The soap features colloidal oats, which provide soothing and exfoliating benefits, and is enriched with glycerin and paraffin to help retain moisture. It’s available in both "fragrance-free" and "unscented" varieties.

2.  CeraVe Hydrating Cleanser bar

Dr. Deanne Mraz is a fan of the multi-tasking, fragrance-free hydrating cleansing bar from CeraVe. This dermatologist-approved bar soap is ideal for both face and body, effectively removing grime, sweat, and dirt while supporting your skin’s natural moisture barrier. With CeraVe’s trusted reputation, this bar soap is a reliable choice for gentle, effective cleansing.
